What are freckles? And why do they appear on your skin?

Freckles are flat, red, light brown, yellow, or black spots (usually darker than the surrounding skin) due to the increase in melanin pigmentation at the keratinocyte in the epidermis. Common locations of freckles are the open skin areas including cheeks, nose, hands, and shoulders.

The dark tone of freckles changes when exposed to sunlight. Specifically, they become darker with increased sun exposure. In general, people with light skin are more likely to have freckles. Can melasma be treated?

Unlike freckles, melasma mainly occurs on facial skin, especially on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip, which are the most common areas of melasma in Vietnam with shallow, deep, or mixed melasma with varying degrees of dark tone.
