Pigmentation Treatment – Distress For Acne Sufferers

If you have experience acne outbreaks, you will also have experienced another skin issue after your acne heals – Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH). Indeed, those dark marks or discolored spots are even more aggravating and distressing than acne itself as it may reduce your confidence and limit you from socializing. So, what causes those dark spots, and what can you do to get rid of them?

Summary
What is PIH?
PIH (Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation) is the medical term used to describe epidermal or dermal melanosis that follows an inflammatory response e.g. acne. PIH is not dangerous and, even without treatment, it can fade in appearance over time. Depending on your skin type, it may take 6 to 12 months for PIH to completely fade, although in some cases it may take longer.
Some treatments will help reduce the appearance of acne including prescribed cream, chemical peel, and laser… While these treatments may not completely erase PIH, they will considerably lighten your skin or speed up the fade time.
What causes PIH?
PIH is very common, and in fact, most people with acne have some degree of it. The issue can worsen due to sunlight (ultraviolet light) exposure, chemicals, or medication e.g. tetracycline, bleomycin, doxorubicin, 5-fluorouracil, busulfan, arsenic, silver, gold, medication for malaria, clofazimine (in anti-leprosy).
Who stands at a high risk of PIH?
PIH can develop in all skin types, but it is most likely for people with darker skin, Fitzpatrick Skin Types III or IV, which is predominant in Vietnam. PIH can happen to anyone regardless of age or gender and affects both men and women equally.
What are treatment options for PIH?

How to prevent PIH?
The sun is one of your biggest enemies, so it is vital to protect yourself by using broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) sunscreen with SPF 30+ or above. Use sunscreen daily and reapply every 2-4 hours during long exposure to the sun as well as wear protective clothing. Avoid the sun during peak hours (from 10 am to 4 pm) whenever possible.
Always avoid picking or popping your acne as it increases the chance of developing PIH. Remember, increasing inflammation results in larger and darker PIH.

This place is amazing; they help me improve my terrible skin condition which had affected my identity, and my confidence for many years. I have been visiting Grace Clinic during summer time for the past two years, and every time I am here, they create a different program in order to fit my skin condition and my limited time. Furthermore, people from Grace Clinic always greet me with warm hearts. They once invited me to have boba tea with them which made me no longer feel like a customer but a friend which it has created a friendship overtime. Hey guys it’s been 3 weeks since we came for our treatment. I can honestly say it’s the best I have had done. Andrew and I look fresh without being overdone.
