Question: Doctor, I have had tiny dilated capillaries running under my cheeks for a long time and they are becoming more visible. What causes spider veins?

A few common causes of spider veins are genetic tendency, hormonal imbalance, overexposure with direct sunlight, narcotics and alcohol abuse, or unhealthy skincare and make-up habits, especially using products that contain corticosteroid which makes the skin thinner and more vulnerable.

Laser Treatment

For many clients dealing with unsightly spider veins, the use of lasers has been extremely effective. There are several types of lasers that successfully treat spider veins, The selection of which laser is best depends upon the severity of your spider veins.

Generally, a laser is used to treat spider veins that are smaller than 3 millimeters and closer to the surface of the skin. Lasers use a strong, focused beam of light that causes the spider vein to clot and dry up.

While some clients really want instant results, the best medical outcome generally requires several treatments. We can try to treat spider veins quickly, but it involves more risk of complications such as darkened pigmentation.

The preferred and safer treatment practice allows us to use a bit lower energy. If we avoid strong energy to close the blood vessels, we will expose the skin to less heat. Remember that high heat is the key component that increases the risks of unwanted complications resulting in darkened skin.

Pulsed Light Treatment (IPL- Intense Pulsed Light, or DPL- Dye Pulsed Light)

This treatment option works well for spider veins of small or medium size that are closer to the surface of the skin. They employ a non-laser high-intensity source of light to treat spider veins by heating and damaging the walls of the blood vessel.

This treatment protocol will also generally require more than one treatment.

Sclerotherapy

Generally, this treatment can be done for spider veins (and varicose veins) that are larger and that cannot be effectively treated by laser. Sclerotherapy involves injecting an irritant directly into the affected vein. When the walls of the vein become irritated, they stick together and keep blood from flowing into the area.

This procedure can reduce swelling and cause the vein to shrink. Over time, the spider vein fades or vanishes. Several treatments may be necessary to obtain the desired results.

Electrodesiccation

Electrodesiccation is a medical procedure that employs a needle-shaped electrode. This delivers a high-frequency electric current to superheat a pinpointed area of the skin. The high voltage current dries out cells that are not wanted on the skin’s surface. This procedure has a higher risk for scarring. It is not often used for spider veins on the face.

Laser and pulsed light treatments are less invasive than sclerotherapy and electrodesiccation. There is no injection or puncturing of the skin surface.
